Understanding the different types of insurance policies

Short-term Disability Insurance

  • If you’re suddenly unable to earn a paycheck due to illness or an accident, short-term disability insurance through your employer can replace a portion of your income during the initial weeks of your disability.

Long-term Disability Insurance

  • Longterm disability coverage picks up where short-term disability insurance leaves off. Once the short-term benefits expire (generally after three to six months), longterm disability insurance pays a percentage of your salary, usually 50 to 60 percent, depending on the policy.

Voluntary Disability Insurance

  • This income protection plan pays a benefit if you are unable to work due to a non-work related illness or injury, as well as maternity.

Employer Paid Disability Insurance

  • Because you pay the premiums with after-tax dollars, the benefits you receive are tax free. However, unlike health insurance premiums, you can’t deduct premiums paid for individual disability income insurance as a medical expense. Sometimes, your employer pays for an individual disability insurance policy on you.
